R.I.P HD DVD (2006 - 2008)

We lived through the format war between Sony's Betamax vs. JVC's VHS way back in 1975. That war lasted a decade as the two standards battled for dominance, with VHS eventually emerging as the winner. Sony's defeat though having a far more superior recording format was beaten by their 60min recording tape length (while the VHS tape could hold 90min, great for movies) and the pornography industry!

What was thought to be a battle that will suffer and bleed till the very end has suddenly come to an abrupt end.
Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation has announced on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 that they will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders.

I guess Sony wouldn't allow themselves to live through another format war defeat. Personally, I would prefer the war to last a little longer; though for a while... there has already been much speculation that HD DVD will be pulling out sooner then expected. This was to drive prices of Blu-ray products down even further. Blu-ray players are still in the range of USD$349 and their movie discs considerably higher then their HD DVD counterparts. With this in mind, it makes the Sony Playstation 3 a very viable purchase option.

  2. It's a template which I slightly modified. Wanted something far more simpler, but thought the Polaroid concept went well with my previous design. I'll keep this design for the time being.

Well... not all that soon... it was a matter of time... not only a battle with the format but also which studios can pump in more $$$.
