Anime Festival Asia (AFA) 2009

This might be a shock to some - I've never attended any Anime event (at least none that I can remember) until the Anime Festival Asia (AFA) 2009. After queuing for more then 30 mins with an entrance fee of SGD$15, I figured I really wasn't that into Anime... nor Japan...

I was never a Manga nor Jap cartoon kinda person. Though there are a few Jap cartoon movies I really love - "Grave of the Fireflies", "Spirited Away" and "Only Yesterday"... I liked costume parties... but I'm really not a fan of Cosplay. In fact, after this event, I've gotten a little freaked out at some totally awful character impersonation. I didn't even realise some were so scary till I looked at the photos! Nightmare!

Giving the festival some credit, there was a showcase for Gundam's 30th Anniversary. Not big with toys poorly labeled. I appreciated the details on the Gundam toys on display but did not leave the showcase feeling I have learnt anything at all about the history of the robot.

There were other Jap toys on display, ranging from Japanese Cooking Toys that make real food...

To the overkill Japanese Popping Edamame Keychain series now with other popping sensations!

Scary Japanese Anime KARAOKE BOOTH selling this Karaoke device called Joysound. Very freaky cause young men were singing in uni-sense to gay Japanese Anime songs with actions!!!

A good percentage of the exhibit space was taken up by retailers, making the experience very similar to Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention... which has FREE ADMISSION!!! I really wasn't blown away. Wendy on the other hand picked up a very decent deal on a last piece of Wii DJ Hero going at SGD$140. That was probably the only redeeming factor of the festival. Events of such nature are becoming saturated and will very soon follow the footsteps of the IT and Electronic fairs sprouting out half a dozen times throughout the year.

  1. Nothing much to review really... thus wasn't inspired. The Cosplay pics were pretty nightmarish... so couldn't bring myself to stick the pics up! LOL!!!
