Almost all my life I have passed by Alexandra Road and jogged through uncountable times through Depot Road. I've always wondered where this huge steel & wooden bridge stretching over dense green vegetation before Malan Road lead. Curiosity finally took the better of me about a month back to venture to where I've never been before.

Through the dark narrow road of Lock Road lie Villa Bali. A surprising find of rustic Balinese arches and structures adorned by colourful Frangipani trees. You wouldn't realise the huge landscaped grounds till you walk deeper into the gardens charmed by lush greenery, fish ponds, water plants and moldy Balinese statues. From rattan and wooden lounge furniture to lava limestone flooring to piped in Indonesian music - The place smelt and felt authentically Balinese.

It's a nice hide away from the hassle and bustle of the city. Where for a couple of hours you will feel transported to a different laid back place.

There's no better time to visit Villa Bali then actually having returned from the 'real' Bali. We decided to attempt dinner which offer a spread of Indonesian, Indian and Western cuisine. We tucked into a Balinese Seafood Platter (with servings of Chili Squid & Prawn, Fried Fish with Sambal, Fish Otah wrapped around lemon grass, Indonesia Fish in Banana Leaf and Man Tou), Sambal Kang Kong, Thai Chicken Green Curry and Satay with Basmati Rice. Unfortunately, dinner was nothing to shout about. The Green Curry had no kick; it was neither creamy nor spicy. The Satay was chunky but totally lacked flavour. The peanut sauce was tasteless and was served in a low quality plastic bowl - those you'd find served with your $3 chicken rice. You'd expect for the higher then average dinner price, they would at least make an effort to present the food properly. I'm a little anal when it comes to overall presentation when I'm paying good money.

The cocktail and mocktail mixes were miserable. I'll be sticking to an ice cold beer the next time I choose to chill out there.

Still, for close proximity to home and it's Balinese styled ambiance, the place deserve some merit. Around the corner (like Dempsey Road) are other interesting food establishments, which include a Harley Bikers hangout - HandleBar. Reviews for their good old Western BBQ Ribs and fiery Hot Wings seem inviting. The Biker Chick in me wants to check out that place one of these days!
