I've spent some time within the week researching and sourcing for a good pair of binoculars. I figured a good pair of binos will serve me well in concerts (such as the recent Harry Connick, Jr.'s My New Orleans Tour) with a distance from the stage, hiking trips and at the upcoming World Youth Day 08 so I can spy on the Pope better.

- I wanted something compact. Something that will fit snuggly into a casual ladies' bag.

- I wanted something with just a little boost in its zoom. The average magnification is at 8x and I thought a 10x or 12x will go further in a boat trip or safari adventure.

- I wanted something rugged and waterproof. It's in my nature.

- I wanted something with good optics. A reliable brand. Ideally one with a good Roof Prism technology over the more classic Porro Prism.

As you can see, I am very fussy. Not any binoculars will do.

My options came down to either the Tasco 10x25mm Amphibian Waterproof / Fogproof Compact Binoculars 1025WPD or the Bushnell 10x25mm H2O FRP Compact Binoculars.

Both come from companies who make great binoculars, weighs around 13oz and have the sturdy, rugged construction I was looking for.

I was initially set on getting the Tasco Amphibian. I loved the "Amphibian" name concept. It has such a versatile ring to the binos character. I placed 2 online orders on radarguns.com and shoptics.com, both came back with out-of-stock replies. The Amphibian range has been discontinued.

The Bushnell H2O on the other hand was abundantly in stock. But prices range from USD$15 (on eBay) all the way to USD$70 (on Amazon), excluding shipping within USA. The average price tag was around USD$30 and about 1/3 more expensive then the Tasco.

So when I chanced upon a second hand piece (but used only once) on eBay going at USD$2.42; my eyes grew wide. With USD exchange rates at its lowest, it was the perfect time to do some US shopping. I won the bid at USD$9.04! Pretty nice deal.

Tom has kindly offered to mail the item back to me. In return, he has my blessing to toy with the gadget before shipment.
