Last year was a dry year in concert attendance as I decided to skip the F1 concerts entirely and missed Jamie Cullum due to TOB. Other acts which I am still kicking myself for not attending include Green Day (how in the world did I give this one a miss... I still cannot understand) and Mika. Though I did get quite up close with Toni Braxton and Emil Chau. Babyface, who opened up Mosaic Music Festival 2010 would probably be my concert of 2010. I have a very soft spot for his soulful, romantic voice as too with Harry Connick Jr.'s.

I needed to break the dry spell with a worthy concert. And then came the announcement of Janet Jackson's "Number Ones: Up Close and Personal World Tour 2011". Covering 35 major cities, Janet will be performing in 5 cities around Asia. Singapore was originally reported to be the kick off city, but Manila, Philippines later took the honour hosting Janet on 4 February. The "Number Ones: Up Close and Personal World Tour 2011" is the icon’s largest ever world tour celebrating for the first time 35 of her number one hits, music exclusively from her chart-topping album "Number Ones". The last time Janet was in Singapore was nearly two decades ago in her "JANET World Tour" back in 1995.

Janet’s website states
“There will also be a focus on venues that will allow Janet to be up close and personal in a much more intimate setting. In each selected city Janet will offer something different to her performance so no show will be the same. This tour is Janet more revealed, more intimate, and more personal than ever before. Don’t look for special effects. Just listen to and look at Janet, as you have never seen her before.”

The organizers weren't joking when they commented in the press about no fancy backdrops, exaggerated costumes nor pyrotechnic effects. The stage was awfully plain and simple. Even the video montages and graphics displayed on the centre stage screen looked sub-standard. There was no other focus but on Janet, herself... Thankfully, she delivered and the selection of songs were well put together. The audience were up on their feet the moment she emerged onto stage with "The Pleasure Principle"

Janet Jackson's Number Ones: Up Close and Personal World Tour 2011 - If / Rhythm Nation

I'm a huge fan of the 1989 album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814. The crowd went wild in the last set roaring in with "Black Cat" and I figured that once in my life, I have to catch "Rhythm Nation" performed live. It was the concert's final act before the encore and Janet totally nailed it. I can die now a happier person ;P

There was certainly something to please everyone with 35 of Janet's best songs packed into 2 hours.

Ending the night, Janet delivers "Together Again" and slows down through the song in tribute to Michael Jackson. You just knew the concert wouldn't be complete without it. Just that since Michael Jackson's death, I've witnessed 3 concerts; Beyonce (in F1 Rocks 2009), Babyface (in Mosaic Music Festival 2010) and now Janet Jackson's World Tour 2011 dedicating a moment. I liked that Janet did hers very subtly showing just 3 photos with her brother. It wasn't an overkill and in fact very beautiful.

If there's anything else. Janet Jackson can't go wrong with her dance moves.

In each of the cities, Janet dedicates one of her songs. To Singapore she gave "Someone To Call My Lover"

“I’ve seen the world, been to many places :). . . the one thing missing was you. We’ll be together in Singapore on February 7th and I can’t wait to sing, dance, and be up close and personal with all of you. Your votes are helping me decide where to bring this very intimate, very different show. It’s not about effects, it’s not an extravaganza, it’s not about being as big as in the past. This one is all about you and me. I love you Singapore. Let’s go!”
